If you want to beat the heat during the summer months, why not go for a ride at night? The days are still pretty long, but once we “fall back” it’s going to be after dark before we get home from work. There’s no better way to unwind after a tough day at the office than a great nighttime ride, and it’s easy enough to do it safely if you have the right gear. To learn more about the joys of nighttime riding, come see us at Specialty Recreation & Marine in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. We also serve dirt bike enthusiasts in Spokane, Washington.

Add Lights to Your Bike

Even if your dirt bike includes a headlight, it’s a good idea to consider making some upgrades if you plan on riding at night. There are a ton of great aftermarket dirt bike headlights to choose from, and they’re a very affordable upgrade if your onboard lighting isn’t getting the job done. When it comes to LED lighting, most lights are now measured in lumens. Traditional lighting used wattages, which isn’t a very precise or accurate unit of measurement of light intensity. There’s no such thing as a light that’s too bright for night riding, but be courteous to oncoming riders.

Add Lights to Your Helmet

Most of us already have a GoPro mount on our helmets, and adding lights is a great safety measure. As you turn your head, your immediate field of vision will be fully illuminated. There are a lot of different ways to set up your helmet-mounted lights including the top and the sides. Keep your riding style in mind as you determine the best setup.

Prepare for Emergencies

You don’t have to pack for an around-the-world trip, but you don’t want to get stuck in the dark miles from home without the right gear! You can always expect the unexpected on a ride, so be sure to carry a tool roll and a first aid kit. You’ll want to have a satellite enabled phone or GPS with you, and some form of two-way communication with other riders in your party. If you have to wait for help, you’ll also want to have some water and some snacks. If you do have an accident, the first thing to do is remain calm. If you’re lost, it’s often safer to wait for help. Rain gear is also a must-have in case you run into an unexpected shower. Most importantly, take your time and ride defensively at all times.
