Preparing for ATV Mudding
Before you head out to go mudding, you'll need to take some steps to ensure your ATV is ready for the adventure. Proper preparation helps your ride go smoothly and reduces the chance of damage to your ATV. Below we cover some key steps to take before your trip. Tend to the Airbox
You'll want to seal your ATV's airbox to ensure it's safe and ready for the ride. Look over all the joints, from the top of the airbox to the engine intake. Make sure no mud can find its way inside and cause issues. Check that the airbox lid is secure and free of any holes.
You can also consider getting a snorkel kit for your ATV. This is especially helpful if you plan on taking your four wheeler into deep mud. These kits usually come with extended CVT inlets, extended air intakes, and outlet exhausts, which all work together to keep important parts of your ATV dry.
Move the Radiator
Next, tend to your ATV's radiator, which tends to be mounted above the front rack. If you know you'll be going hard in the mud, relocate the radiator so that it'll be positioned up and away from the muddy water that you'll be exploring.
You'll also want to be proactive about keeping your ATV radiator as clean as possible. A clogged radiator can result in overheating of your ATV engine, so be sure to keep the moisture out. You can use tape or modify the body to help protect your radiator.
Get a Winch
A winch is a common ATV accessory that can be used in a variety of settings, making it a valuable tool. If you don't already own one, go out and get one before your next mudding adventure. It's not uncommon for riders to get stuck while mudding - even experienced ones. A winch will help pull your ATV out and get it back in action.
You'll want to inspect your winch every so often to ensure it's still in good condition and able to get the job done. Begin by putting your winch in free-spool and take the entire line out. Then look carefully at the line to see if you can spot any damage. When you are ready to spool the winch line back in, you'll need to apply pressure to the cable. The easiest way to do this is to get a second pair of hands to help you, but you can hook the line around an immovable object in a pinch.
Grease Up Your ATV's Parts
Your ATV is full of electrical connections. Before you subject them to moisture, apply a heavy coat of dielectric grease. Consider getting marine grade dielectric grease since it's water resistant and can help the parts of your ATV last longer. You can also spray parts of your ATV with WD-40 before your mudding excursions, such as the throttle, hand grips, and brake levers. This will help keep mud off of these parts and make the cleanup work easier.
