Riding Your UTV in the Snow
Your UTV is well-suited for outdoor adventures, including adventures in the snow. It's hard to imagine a better way to enjoy winter then tearing up a snowy trail in your side-by-side. But your UTV isn't ready for the snowy terrain just yet. You'll need to do a little planning and preparation to ensure a safe and successful ride. We've gathered up the following tips for riding your UTV in the snow. If you want more tips or want to explore UTVs for sale, visit Specialty Recreation & Marine. Our dealership is located in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. We also proudly serve those in Spokane, Washington.
1. Get Your UTV Ready
Winter riding means plummeting temperatures, so you will need to ensure your UTV is ready for the bitter cold. Switch out the standard engine fluids for winter-specific products. Check that there is not any excess water in your coolant that could freeze and replace it with a coolant that is safe for below-freezing temperatures.
You can also consider upgrading your UTV to be better suited for snowy trails. A snowplow attachment can create an easy path for your side-by-side and can also be used to clear your driveway in no time. Consider getting snow tires that provide better traction. For the best traction, consider getting tracks for your vehicle. Another great upgrade is a full cover, which can protect you from snowfall and chilling winter winds. At the very least, you will want a windshield to help block some of the wind.
2. Get the Proper Attire
Winter UTV riding will be incredibly cold once you pair the plummeting temperatures with the winter wind. You'll need to wear the right clothing to stay warm. Otherwise, you'll have to cut your ride short due to chattering teeth and endless shivering.
Your summer UTV helmet might let too much cold air in. If you don't already have a full-face helmet, get one. It will help block wind and provide much needed insulation. You'll also want insulated gloves and hand warmers for your pockets. Layer your clothes to get the most heat (and the option to remove layers if the weather warms up). Your outermost layer should be snow pants and a snow jacket.
3. Use Safe UTV Riding Practices
Riding your side-by-side in the winter will be different than any other time of year. The trails can be more unpredictable given the chances for snow and ice. You won't want to go full speed because of this. Instead, ride at a slower temperature to compensate for the altered trail conditions. Try to avoid sudden stops or direction changes as much as you can. Keep your UTV slow and steady, especially when you slow down or take a turn.
The colder temperatures can also make UTV riding more exhausting than normal. You may need to take breaks more often, eat more snacks to give your body fuel, and drink more water to stay hydrated. Make sure you are well-rested before you go on a UTV since you'll need plenty of focus for safe snow riding. Stay alert, stay safe, and enjoy a great time on the snowy trail!
